The Circulation of Blood in Humans

The Pumping of the Heart.

Heart is made up of mostly of strong muscle, called cardiac muscle. Cardiac muscle are inter-connected which allows electrical signals to be conducted rapidly through the heart and stimulate the cardiac muscle cells to contract in a coordinated way. Cardiac muscles are known as myogenic because it will contracts and relaxes without the need of receive impulses from nervous system.

The sinoatrial (SA) node act as pacemaker which initiated and coordinated for contraction of the heart. The pacemaker is located in wall of the right atrium. It generates electrical impulses which spread rapidly over the walls of atria and causing the atria to contract in a rhythmical pattern.
The impulses reach the atrioventricular (AV) node. Atrioventricular (AV) node is located at the floor of the right atrium. The atrioventricular (AV) node specialised muscle fibres called bundle of His fibres, bundle branches and Purkinje fibres conduct the signals to the apex of the heart and throughout the walls of the ventricles, causing the ventricles to contract and push the blood out to the lungs and body.
